www.limerickanimalwelfare.ie.. Munster legend Jerry Flannery supported the fantastic Limerick Animal Welfare (L.A.W.) by officially opening their new store on Roche's Street. Animal lovers from all over Limerick including Miss United Nations Europe 2010 Sami Long turned out to show their support. Jerry told us that every penny raised from the store goes to support the Animal Sanctuary, also known as the "Field of Dreams', at Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. We decided to take a trip to the sanctuary and chatted with founder Marion Fitzgibbon and store manager Claire Kirby about the work done at the sanctuary, and how you can help.
Now almost thirty years in operation, L.A.W. is dedicated to caring for abandoned and neglected animals in Limerick and surrounding areas. Over the last five years alone it has saved more than 2,000 animals. Kind-hearted volunteers take in and care all kinds of animals until they can find the best 'forever' home possible. Naturally, caring for an animal costs considerably more than destroying them, and the huge drop in donations faced by all charities these days' means that pressure is mounting on the staff at L.A.W.
In fact, they need money now more than ever. The first phase of their buildings in Kilfinane was completed in 2007, and the organisation now faces the huge task of starting Phase Two of the project, which is the main building and will incorporate a re-homing area for dogs, offices, a veterinary clinic and living accommodation for staff. Phase Three, the final building, will be the isolation kennel for cats and kittens. The entire project is estimated to cost around 1m, and the charity has taken out a mortgage of 650,000 and they need your help!
